1 Killed, 2 Hurt as Motorist Drives Into Path of Train

A motorist drove his car around a lowered gate arm at a railroad crossing in Pomona early Thursday and into the path of a freight train, police said. The train smashed into the car, killing one passenger and injuring the driver and two other passengers.

The crash on San Antonio Avenue, near 1st Street, killed Phillip Bryant Jr., 24, of Pomona. The driver, Sir James Damone Wellington, 21, of Ontario was in serious condition at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Another passenger was in good condition and a third was treated and released.

Pomona Police Detective Ray Birch said the car was southbound on San Antonio Avenue about 1:30 a.m. when it went around the arm and over two sets of tracks. It was struck on a third set by a train traveling about 55 m.p.h.
