COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Missouri Kansas City Puts SCC at Height Disadvantage

Despite being a much smaller team, Southern California College was able to stay close to Division I independent Missouri Kansas City for part of the first half before a 10-0 run started the Kangaroos’ rolling toward a 116-78 victory in Kansas City, Mo.

The Vanguards (12-3), with only one player taller than 6 feet 6, trailed, 25-21, before UMKC (10-3) went on its decisive spurt.

David Robinson, the Kangaroos’ 6-10 center who had a two-inch advantage over Vanguard center Darrin Kramer, scored 33 points, hitting 13 of 16 from the field and seven of nine from the free-throw line. Robinson also had a team-high eight rebounds as the Kangaroos outrebounded Southern California College, 51-28.

Rick Witmer led the Vanguards, ranked 11th in the NAIA Division I poll, with 25 points, including five three-pointers. Keith Randolph added 18 points and Ed Johnson 10.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 72, UC San Diego 61--Stacy Kirch made up for four-for-14 shooting from the field by hitting six of seven free throws to finish with 15 points as the host Eagles won their sixth consecutive.

Center Gitte Mejer added 14 points before fouling out and forward Nancy Geisler had 13 as Christ College Irvine raised its record to 11-2.

UC San Diego center Lisa Beaver led all scorers with 16 points as the Tritons fell to 6-5.

Southern California College 70, La Verne 38--Cyndie Lyons scored 15 points as host Southern California College (7-10) had little trouble with La Verne (2-8).

In nonconference wrestling:

Northern Iowa 32, Cal State Fullerton 6--Lyndon Campbell and Laszlo Molnar were the only Titan winners as the seventh-ranked Panthers (4-1) easily won at Titan Gym. Cal State Fullerton fell to 2-4-1.

In the Milwaukee Tennis Classic:

Irvine doubles team advances--Brett Hansen-Dent and Marco Zuniga defeated Tommy North and Steve Wilson from Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to today’s quarterfinal round.
