The Boston Celtics traded guard Brian Shaw to the Miami Heat Friday night for guard Sherman Douglas.

The trade was announced shortly after the Celtics lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves, 104-94. Shaw did not play in the game.

Celtic executive Dave Gavitt said he expected the two players would join their new teams tonight.

Douglas, a second-round pick in the 1989 draft out of Syracuse, was a holdout at the beginning of the season and played his first game for the Heat on Jan. 2 after Miami matched a contract offer from the Lakers.

Shaw, the Celtics’ top draft pick in 1988 out of UC Santa Barbara, left the team after his rookie season to play in Italy. He rejoined the team last season after a court battle over his services. But injuries this season limited him to 17 games.
