Holmgren New Coach of Packers
Mike Holmgren, the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator, became coach of the Green Bay Packers Saturday. Holmgren, 43, signed a five-year, $2.5-million contract.
Holmgren was still under contract to the 49ers, who will receive a second-round draft choice as compensation. The Associated Press reported that the 49ers simply will keep the 1992 second-round pick promised to the Packers in a trade for linebacker Tim Harris.
Holmgren, USC’s quarterback in the late 1960s, was hired by the 49ers in 1986 and was promoted to offensive coordinator after George Seifert replaced Bill Walsh as coach before the 1989 season.
