Martinez Wins Decision at Forum
Jose Martinez won a unanimous 10-round decision over Mexican Gaby Romero in a nontitle featherweight bout at the Forum on Monday night.
Martinez, of Hanford, Calif., was supposed to fight Alfred Rangel of San Antonio, but Rangel withdrew because he suffered a broken rib in sparring.
Martinez knocked down Romero in the third round just before the bell and dominated throughout. All three judges scored the bout 100-89.
Martinez, 21, weighed 126 pounds; Romero, 29, weighed 127. Martinez has an 18-4-1 record with 10 knockouts; Romero fell to 10-8 with five knockouts.
Also, Mauro Gutierrez (46-16-5) of Mexico stopped Jose Castro (16-3-1) of Santa Ana in the seventh round of their junior-welterweight bout, and Ysaias Zamudio (27-3-1) of Blythe, Calif., won a unanimous decision over Abselon Briceno (4-9-1) of Sonora, Mexico, in their flyweight bout.
