County OKs Plan to Contain Soil Erosion

Share

An emergency seeding program to contain soil erosion in the western Antelope Valley was approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

In an unanimous vote, the supervisors agreed to contribute nearly $72,000 toward the project, for which the federal government has already agreed to provide more than $550,000.

The money will pay for seeding about 2,466 acres west of Antelope Acres with Indian Rice and Indian Wheat grasses, as recommended by a county advisory panel, the Dustbusters Task Force.

The area is considered the worst among more than 11,000 acres where erosion of drought-ravaged and overgrazed farmland in the western valley has contributed to severe dust storms. Strong and even moderate winds have filled houses, yards and swimming pools with dust and debris in recent years.
