COLLEGE ROUNDUP : No. 12 SCC Loses Conference Opener to Cal Baptist

Southern California College, ranked 12th in the NAIA national poll, lost its men’s basketball opener in the Golden State Athletic Assn. to unranked Cal Baptist, 89-85, Tuesday in Riverside.

Southern California College (12-4, 0-1 in conference) trailed, 46-33, at the half but rallied to get as close as 88-85 on a basket by Rick Witmer with 25 seconds left.

But SCC then called a timeout, but didn’t have one, and was charged with a technical foul.

Lance Williams made one of two free throws and Cal Baptist was able to run enough time off the clock to clinch the victory.

Williams finished with 21 points and Ken Jones had 16 for Cal Baptist.

Witmer scored 32 points and Edmond Johnson had 19 for SCC.

In another Golden State Athletic Assn. game:

Christ College Irvine 88, Point Loma 84 (OT)--Charles Lockard scored 28 points and D’Andre Brown added 23 as Christ College Irvine won at Point Loma. Lockard was 10 of 16 from the field, including five of nine three-pointers.

Christ College Irvine (9-9, 1-1) trailed, 45-36, at the half but rallied in the second half. Jason Vaughn added 13 for Christ College Irvine.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

Cal State Long Beach 71, Cal State Fullerton 65--Claudette Jackson had a career-high 32 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for Fullerton (5-7, 0-3), but the Titans made only 30% of their shots and lost their sixth straight. Trisa Jackson had 18 points for the 49ers (9-3, 3-0).

In a Golden State Athletic Assn. women’s game:

Christ College Irvine 104, Point Loma 83--Gitte Mejer scored 25 points and Nancy Geisler had 18 for host CCI (13-2). Stacy Kirch had 12 points and 13 assists for the Eagles, who made 33 of 40 free throws and shot 54% from the field. Camille Armijo scored a game-high 26 points for Point Loma (10-5).
