No. 1 Seles Still Hasn’t Lost a Set; Edberg, Lendl, Wheaton Also Win

Top-seeded Monica Seles showed no sighns of a strained neck during a 6-1, 6-1 third-round victory over Yayuk Basuki during the third round of the Australian Open on Friday.

Seles has spent less than three hours on court and hasn’t lost a set in her three victories. The defending champion, who won all three Grand Slam events she entered last year, used the match against Basuki to sharpen her baseline game.

“When I go out for a match, I never try anything tactical,” Seles said. “I just paly. I never go into a match with a game plan.”

Seles didn’t even need to go to the net. Basuki made 42 errors to Seles’ 15.

-- The men’s No. 1 seed, Stefan Edberg, rebounded from service breaks early in the first and third sets to beat Australian John Fitzgerald 7-5,6-1,6-4.

-- Patrick McEnroe, who reached the semifinals here last year, lost to Russia’s Andrei Chesnokov, 6-4,1-6,1-6,6-1,6-3.

-- No. 5 Ivan Lendl, a two-time champion, scored a 6-4,6-4,7-6 (8-6) victory over Germany’s Markus Zoecke.

-- David Wheaton, the No. 15 seed and winner of $2 million at the Grand Slam Cup last month, beat Lars Koslowski, 6-4,6-3,6-3.
