SIMI VALLEY : Group Backs Homes, Shops for School Site
A task force recommended Tuesday that the Simi Valley Unified School District build retail stores, homes and apartments on a 36-acre parcel that once was designated for a high school.
Representatives of the task force gave the school board suggestions for developing the northeast corner of Tapo Canyon Road and Alamo Street.
Development ideas include building a retail shopping center, single-family houses, duplexes and apartments for senior citizens.
The suggestions follow four public meetings of the task force, which includes Neighborhood Council members, residents and representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and the PTA.
The district’s next step would be to request an amendment of the city’s General Plan, which calls for 111 single-family houses and 90 apartments for senior citizens to be built on the property. The City Council would have to approve a zone change before shops and high-density housing could be built.
A high school was originally planned for the district-owned property across from City Hall. After enrollment projections indicated that the city would not need another high school, the district decided to develop the land, which is now used for farming.
