Broncos Fire Ex-Raider Coach Shanahan
Saying their relationship had become unworkable, Coach Dan Reeves of the Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan on Tuesday.
Shanahan, 39, the former head coach of the Raiders, was in his second stint as Denver’s offensive coordinator.
Shanahan went to Denver in 1984 as a wide receiver coach and was offensive coordinator from 1985-87, helping the Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl appearances. He was hired as coach of the Raiders in 1988, but was fired four games into the following season after an 8-12 record. He returned to the Broncos in 1990.
Reeves cited philosophical differences with Shanahan, and a Bronco player who declined to be identified said that Reeves and Shanahan rarely spoke toward the end of the 1991 season.
