$25,000 Grant Awarded to Study Effects of El Nino
Marine scientists based in La Jolla have received a grant to chart the movement and effects of the weather phenomenon known as El Nino.
The program, dubbed El Nino Watch, will analyze water temperatures, satellite weather information and shipboard and buoy data from the equatorial Pacific to Alaska.
Shifts in ocean temperatures and their affects on marine life and climate have varied widely in previous El Nino years, altering fish breeding and marine migration, said Susan Smith, a biologist with the Southwest Fisheries Science Center.
The program grant for the first year is about $25,000, said officials with the center, part of the National Marine Fisheries Service.
