25 Tutors Graduate From Literacy Program

Twenty-five basic reading tutors graduated from the Literacy Volunteers of America program at the Huntington Beach Library.

They include Terri Bakken, Kristy Brophy, Carol Dixon, Jackie Fonseca, Doreen Gemm, Jane Herman, Jeff Herzog, Helga Lund, Lorraine Maltby, Robert Mehelich, David Mootchinik, Neil Reynolds, Stephany Zitko and Tinnia Zitter, all of Huntington Beach, and Steve Bolotin, Nicole Lippuner and Catherine Wachter, all of Costa Mesa.

Others are Nancy Coghlin, Suzanne Hessel, Shirley Rasmussen and Lynda Steen, all of Fountain Valley; Frances Keith and Christine Kurien, both of Westminster; Wendy NcPherson, Garden Grove, and Sharon Schaefer, Brea.

The program provides literacy services to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing and spelling skills. The service is free.

Newport Beach resident David Ackroyd will leave Feb. 25 for Swaziland, Africa, to teach metalworking and mechanical drawing as a Peace Corps volunteer.

“Now I am retired and have ample time, good health and the strong desire to fulfill my one-time ambition to join the Peace Corps,” said Ackroyd, 65, a former manufacturing engineer.

Jan Young of Irvine has been appointed to the executive board of directors of Kids Cancer Connection, a nonprofit support group for child cancer victims and their families in the county.

Her board responsibilities will include acting as press chairwoman and supervising the organization’s Christmas Card program which annually raises up to $300,000.

Young, a management consultant for Century 21 real estate, is a founder and past president of Orange County Women in Business.

Garden Grove residents Lillian and George Ellenoff, who recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary, have been named “Senior Center Sweethearts” for the Feb. 12 Garden Grove Jewish Senior Center Sweetheart Luncheon.

Laurel Elementary School in Brea won the grand prize for its mural on visions of transportation in the year 2091 in a contest promoted by the California Department of Transportation.

Other winners were Esplanade Elementary in Orange; Mariposa Elementary in Brea; Santiago Elementary in Santa Ana, and Valencia Park Elementary in Fullerton.

San Clemente resident Timothy R. Wright, a UCLA graduate and a former Peace Corps volunteer, has been presented a Fulbright grant to research health delivery services in Bolivia.

While in the Peace Corps, Wright served as a rural public health nurse in a small Andean village in Ecuador. Before that, he worked part time in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.

Coastline Community College awarded $200 scholarships to students John Aucher, Newport Beach; Susan Burke, El Toro; and Miriam Kerr, Costa Mesa, based on their scholarship, college plans, career goals, employment history, honors and activities.

The awards were presented by the Herman R. Tate Fund. Tate, a longtime Orange County resident and businessman who died in 1989, authorized a $40,000 endowment to the college for the scholarships.

Jannell Zicarelli, 15, of Irvine was recently crowned 1992 Orange County Miss TEEN. She was awarded a $500 scholarship and will represent Orange County at the state contest in July in Los Angeles.

Jannell, daughter of Val and Brent J. Zicarelli of Irvine, is a cheerleader at Irvine High School and is a state baton champion.

She was recently appointed to the Juvenile Justice Commission, which acts as an advocate arm of the juvenile court.

Patricia Puleo, principal of Golden Hill Elementary School in Fullerton, was named the Outstanding Orange County Administrator at the recent California School Leadership Academy’s convocation in San Francisco. She has been an administrator with Fullerton School District since 1978 and has been principal since 1986.
