Idea Whose Time Should Have Come

Re “Anaheim Police Union Chief Pleads for More Officers” (Jan. 23): It is ironic that more than a decade ago former Councilman Don Roth requested the City Council to establish a Public Safety Board made up of interested citizens who would supply input to the city administration and the council.

There was not a second vote to give the council an opportunity to approve Roth’s original (proposal). Just think of the value to today’s community if such a five-member board had been established.

Undoubtedly the members of that board would have developed the necessary skills to act as a channel of communication on public safety matters between the citizens and the council. The Public Safety Board might even have been empowered to develop the long overdue Public Safety Master Plan giving direction, advice, and support to Anaheim’s City Council’s deliberations in these matters.
