Police Arrest Man After 3-Hour Standoff
A Van Nuys man wanted in 13 armed robberies was arrested after Los Angeles police ended a three-hour standoff by using tear gas to flush him out from under a house, authorities said Sunday.
Raymond Bowne, 20, was suspected of robberies of bars and fast-food restaurants around the San Fernando Valley over the last several months, according to police reports. He was being held Sunday in lieu of $47,500 bail.
Police said Bowne and another man ran off when they were spotted by officers about 5 p.m. Saturday in a car outside the Ralph’s grocery store at Woodman Avenue and Sherman Way, Van Nuys.
The second man was not found, but Bowne was discovered a few minutes later hiding under a house in the 7100 block of Cantaloupe Avenue. When he did not emerge, members of a SWAT team fired tear gas under the house to force him out. He was unarmed, according to police reports, but unspecified weapons were found in the car.
