Los Angeles County lifeguards searched for two fishermen swept off rocks at Rancho Palos Verdes Sunday afternoon before calling off the rescue mission at nightfall.
The search for the missing men was to resume this morning, said Lifeguard Lt. Robert Moore. Their disappearance was the second such incident during the weekend.
The missing men, believed to be in their late 20s, were standing on offshore rocks below Marguerite Drive, just south of Lunada Bay, when a bystander saw them washed away by rough surf, Moore said. Two rescue boats, four divers and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter were dispatched after the witness scrambled up a bluff to report the emergency by phone at about 4:30 p.m., Moore said.
Lifeguards conducting the search described the three- to four-foot surf as extremely rough and said it would have been impossible for a non-swimmer to get out of the water, Moore said.
On Saturday, a 57-year-old Los Angeles man drowned after he was swept off rocks at Smugglers’ Cove at Rancho Palos Verdes. The victim, George Robinson, had been fishing.
