Psaros Signs at Fresno State, Other Locals Make Decisions

Saddleback College lineman Damon Psaros, the Mission Conference defensive player of the year, heads the list of community college football players who announced commitments to four-year colleges Monday.

Psaros, a J.C. Grid-Wire All American, signed with Fresno State. He led Saddleback in tackles with 95 and also in sacks with 12 1/2.

He leaves with the Gauchos’ career record for tackles (182). He is also the leader in blocked kicks (six).

Psaros, who is 6 feet 1 and 225 pounds, was the South Coast League defensive player of the year when he was at Capistrano Valley High School.

Five of his teammates also made commitments. Offensive lineman John McKain signed with Maryland, defensive back Cedric Blanks signed with Livingston University in Alabama, and defensive lineman Bill Trainor will play at Culver-Stockton College, an NAIA school in Canton, Mo.

Defensive lineman Tracy Hirchag and reserve quarterback Greg Pfrunder have signed with Sonoma State.

Fullerton announced seven players who have made commitments, headed by kicker Scott Szeredy, who signed with Texas.

Szeredy, an all-state selection, tied the Fullerton single-season record for field goals (18). He also tied the national community college record by kicking five in a game against Riverside in the final game of last season.

Defensive back Claudius Wright signed with Arizona. Defensive tackle Marcus Royster became the third Hornet player in two seasons to agree to attend Pittsburgh. Punter Kevin Leon and tight end Rob Coons signed with the Panthers last season.

Others Fullerton signees: offensive lineman Ray Madrigal (Fresno State), defensive back Adrian Oliphant (Sacramento State), Randy Roskelly (Southern Utah State) and defensive lineman Mike DeClark (Northwest Oklahoma State).

Rancho Santiago had five players sign, led by linebacker Damon Bland, who is going to Fresno State.

San Francisco State restocked at wide receiver by signing four Dons: Ricky Robinson, Juan Acuna, Myron Williams and Maurice Dixon. Kicker David Knorr also signed with San Francisco State.

Sedric Shorter, a defensive lineman from Orange Coast, has made an oral commitment to play at Washington State, pending completion of academic requirements at OCC this spring.
