Teens Lead CHP on 60-Mile, I-5 Chase
Three juveniles, ages 12 to 14, were arrested early Wednesday after leading police and California Highway Patrol officers on a 60-mile high-speed chase in a stolen car, police said.
No one was hurt in the chase, which started in the Logan Heights area and ended about 60 miles north in San Clemente, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
The pursuit started about 2 a.m. when the car, driven east on the 3700 block of National Avenue by a 14-year-old, failed to stop for a patrol car that tried to pull him over because the headlights were off, Robinson said.
Instead, the youths raced to nearby Interstate 805, at which point CHP units joined in the pursuit, Robinson said.
The car headed north on I-805, then north on I-5, with speeds sometimes topping 100 m.p.h. The chase ended on a street in San Clemente almost an hour later, when the car ran out of gas, Robinson said.
Police found stolen property, including stereo equipment, inside the car, he said.
The driver was arrested on charges of auto theft, while the two others were taken to Juvenile Hall, Robinson said.
