COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Canyons Edges Glendale, 75-73

Marquis Wilborn went from hero to goat and back to hero Wednesday night in a wild Western State Conference South Division basketball game at Glendale College.

The College of the Canyons forward drove for the go-ahead basket with less than 20 seconds to play in regulation but was called for an offensive foul after he converted the shot.

His basket lifted the Cougars into the lead but gave Glendale’s Alfonso Pule a one-and-one opportunity at the other end.

Pule sank both free throws to tie the score, 65-65, and send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Wilborn made up for his mistake by grabbing a key offensive rebound that helped Canyons pull out a 75-73 victory.

Jason Joynes (21 points, nine rebounds) put Canyons ahead, 74-73, with a free throw but missed his second opportunity. Wilborn slipped inside and grabbed the rebound with 29 seconds to play, giving Canyons (19-6, 4-1 in division play) a chance to run out the clock.

Joynes, who had five of the Cougars’ 10 points in overtime, was fouled with 25 seconds left and sank one of two free throws.

Glendale called time out with nine seconds remaining but never got a good look at the basket when play resumed.

The Vaqueros (12-12, 2-3) settled for an off-balance three-point shot by reserve forward Harry Marks (12 points), but the ball bounced off the glass at the buzzer.

Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin believed Marks was fouled by Rasaan Hall.

“It looked like he got sort of pushed,” Beauchemin said. “We were trying to free up Harry, but we got stuck out too high.”

Glendale forced overtime despite shooting 27% from the field in the second half.

Juwan Smith led the Vaqueros with game-high totals of 24 points and 14 rebounds, but he fouled out with 25 seconds remaining in overtime--one of two Vaqueros to foul out.

Canyons lost Reggie Bell to injury when the forward aggravated his sprained left ankle and departed the game with 8 minutes 48 seconds left in the first half.
