Former Newport Harbor Standout Selected by WLAF’s Monarchs

Shane Foley, a former Orange County career passing leader who saw limited action at USC, was selected by the London Monarchs in the 15th round of the World League of American Football draft Wednesday.

“I’m really excited about getting another chance to play,” said Foley, who passed for 5,361 yards while at Newport Harbor in 1984 and 1985, a mark later surpassed by Todd Marinovich. “I’ve never been to Europe. I’m really pumped up about going over there and playing football again. From what I’ve seen, the enthusiasm there for football seems phenomenal.”

Foley, 24, has been out of football since completing his eligibility in 1990 at USC, where he played behind Rodney Peete and Marinovich.

Orlando, owned by Raj Bhathal of Tustin, took two players with county ties. The Thunder selected Howard Gasser, a quarterback who played at Laguna Hills High and Saddleback College, in the 24th round and wide receiver Dennis Arey, a former Fountain Valley High standout, two rounds later.

Other players with county ties selected were Robert Flory, an offensive guard from Huntington Beach High and Golden West College, by the expansion Ohio Glory in the 21st round, and Jerry Leggett, a defensive end who played at Cal State Fullerton in 1988, selected by the New York/New Jersey Knights in the 27th.
