1 Man Shot, 1 Flees in Roommates’ Dispute

One man suffered a superficial gunshot wound and another was sought by authorities after a dispute between two roommates over household chores led to a seven-hour standoff Thursday outside a Kagel Canyon home, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The standoff in the 11900 block of Creek Trail ended at 4:30 a.m. when deputies decided that the man they sought, Rollin T. Mills, 51, had probably fled before authorities arrived, Deputy John Ashley said.

During an argument Wednesday night, Mills pointed a gun at his roommate, Rick Santillanes, 39, the deputy said. A fight began, the gun fired and a ricochet off the floor wounded Santillanes in the hand.

Santillanes called authorities. Deputies surrounded the house but eventually concluded that “the severity of the incident did not warrant making a forced entry into the home,” Ashley said.

The Sheriff’s Department will present the case to the Los Angeles district attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed against Mills, the deputy said.
