ELECTIONS : Voters in 23 Cities to Go to Polls April 14
- Share via
More than 150 candidates have filed to put their names on the April 14 ballot for city council, mayor and other offices in 23 San Gabriel Valley cities.
In addition, nine measures have been placed on the ballot in seven cities, including a proposal to establish card clubs in Baldwin Park and a prohibition against auditoriums with more than 1,000 seats in La Verne.
The absence of one or more incumbents in several races caused the filing deadline to be extended to Tuesday in those cities to allow extra filing time for those who would not challenge an incumbent.
In several cases, City Council vacancies left by incumbents attracted large fields. Nine names will be on the ballot in Monterey Park, eight in Covina and Claremont, seven in San Gabriel and six in Azusa with one incumbent in each having decided not to run. At least two seats are in contention in each of those cities. In West Covina, where the vacancy caused by the death of Councilman William Tarozzi will be filled, there are six candidates.
Also, seven candidates entered the City Council race for two seats in Baldwin Park, where incumbent Herschel Keyser filed for reelection the day after 200 of the city’s police officers demanded his resignation over abusive remarks he allegedly made while being arrested for drunk driving. The second seat on the council is that of incumbent Martin Gallegos, who has filed for reelection.
On the other hand, in San Marino, where no incumbents sought reelection, only four candidates are competing for two open seats.
The elected mayors of Azusa, Baldwin Park and Monrovia are facing challenges, but Mayor Jon Harry Blickenstaff in La Verne is unopposed.
Following are the candidates (with age and occupation if provided on their filing papers) and ballot measures in 11 of the cities. The remainder will be published on Thursday.
