Strike The Gold Comes Up Short Again, Finishing Third

Strike The Gold, the 1991 Kentucky Derby winner, finished third Monday in the in the $75,000 Broward Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Honest Ensign, an 11-1 shot, led the entire way in the 1 1/8-mile race, beating Peanut Butter Onit by a nose and Strike the Gold, the odds-on favorite, by a length.

It was the 10th consecutive race Strike The Gold had failed to win since the Kentucky Derby.

Honest Ensign, ridden by Jean Cruguet, was timed in 1:49 2/5 and paid $24.80, $8.40 and $3.20. Peanut Butter Onit paid $4 and $2.40, while Strike the Gold paid $2.20.

Honest Ensign, a 4-year-old Florida-bred son of Admiral’s Flag, had never won a stakes race prior to the Broward. He earned $45,000 Monday to raise his career total to $170,469.
