When Greg Haskell took over as Savanna’s coach this season, the Rebels had to adjust to a slower tempo. Fast breaks, while not taboo, became a rarity and the Rebels have averaged about 20 fewer points per game than last season. But the results speak for themselves--after finishing a game out of first place in 1991, Savanna finished in a three-way tie for the Orange League championship. Priest has played an integral part in the Rebels’ success, Haskell said. “It’s not uncommon for us to score in the 40s and he still scores about 22 points a game,” Haskell said. “He’s basically got a frosh-soph team and Marlon Watson around him.” Wednesday, in a 45-26 victory over Brea-Olinda, Priest scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter. Priest, who finished the regular season with a 22.1 average, also scored 23 Friday in a 47-34 victory over Magnolia. “I’ve had college coaches tell me he is the smartest offensive player in Orange County this year--not necessarily the most talented, but the smartest,” Haskell said.

Other top performers:

Darren Crooks, who scored 27 points in Marina’s 60-49 victory over Westminster and 22 in an 84-57 victory over Santa Ana, as the Vikings won a share of their third consecutive Sunset League title.

Charlie Davidson, a Saddleback hurdler who won the prep 50-meter hurdles in a Sunkist Invitational-record time of 6.80 seconds.

Clay Harty, who scored two goals in each of two Servite soccer victories--5-1 over Bishop Amat and 5-2 over Loyola--to give him 24 for the season.

Matt Kordik, who had 34 points for Esperanza in a 74-56 victory over El Dorado and 21 points in a 53-37 victory over Cypress.
