COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Pounds Arizona in 22-6 Victory

Phil Nevin had four hits, scored five runs and drove in four as visiting Cal State Fullerton beat Arizona, 22-6, in a nonconference baseball game Friday.

Jason Moler added four hits, four runs and four RBIs for the Titans (6-3). Fullerton had 22 hits, including home runs by Nevin, Moler, and sophomores Bret Hemphill and Jim Betzsold.

Hemphill also had a double and four RBIs. Betzsold’s home run was a pinch-hit, three-run shot in the eighth inning, when Fullerton scored 10 runs. It was his second pinch-hit home run this season.

Bill Fitzgerald (3-0) allowed 10 hits and five runs in seven innings for the victory. Arizona (10-6) won the first meeting Thursday, 19-15. The teams conclude the series today at noon.

In other nonconference baseball:

UC Irvine 6, Cal Poly Pomona 1--Chris Facione’s homer drove in two runs during a five-run first inning as the host Anteaters improved to 6-3.

Irvine also got RBIs during the inning from Tim McDonnell and Billy Bardens. Ray Walker scored the first run on a wild pitch by Scott Hunter (0-1). McDonnell hit a third-inning solo homer.

Starter Mike Calvert (1-0) pitched five shutout innings, allowing four hits, walking three and striking out one.

In the District III women’s basketball playoffs:

Christ College Irvine 105, Cal Baptist 80--Gitte Mejer scored 27 points and Nancy Geisler added 26 for host Christ College Irvine (24-4). Irvine plays host to Fresno Pacific Tuesday in the District III final.

Mejer made 10 of 14 shots from the field and Geisler was eight of 10 from the field, including six of seven on three-point tries.
