Ex-Sockers Organize Exhibition Team

Several former Sockers have organized into an outdoor team, dubbed Sockers Magic, to participate in benefit exhibitions beginning Sunday at the University of San Diego when they will play a South Bay All-Star team at 2 p.m.

Six hundred tickets have been sold; proceeds go to youth soccer organizations.

The team includes former Sockers Juli Veee, Jean Willrich, George Katakalidas, Ade Coker and Vidal Fernandez.

A second game has been scheduled for March 15 at San Pasqual High (2 p.m.) against a countywide select team.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers have signed free agent tight end/H-back Chris Verhulst, a veteran of 28 games in three NFL seasons.

Drafted out of Chico State in the fifth round by the Houston Oilers in 1988, Verhulst joined the Denver Broncos as a Plan B free agent in March 1990, and played in 11 games that season.

BASEBALL

University of San Diego won its fourth game in a row by collecting 13 hits in a 13-8 nonconference victory over UC Riverside.

Freshman Travis Burgus (1-1) picked up the victory for the Toreros (5-4).

UC Riverside (8-6) went up 3-0 in the top of the first on a home run by Chad Townsend, but the Toreros scored at least one run in innings two through seven, including five in the sixth. UC Riverside aided the cause with five errors.

USD will go for No. 5 in a row today against UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

BOXING

Ricardo Ponce of Vista lost a three-round decision to Narciso Aleman of Camp Lejeune, N.C., in the 1992 U.S. Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Ponce, a 139-pounder, lost to Aleman, 62-25.

Twelve weight division winners and 12 runner-ups from this tournament will get automatic berths in the Olympic Trials June 10-14 at Worcester, Mass.
