OUTLOOK

Things are looking up for the Lancers, providing they can stay healthy. They have three solid pitchers in juniors Hernandez, Peinado and Reitz. Hernandez is the best of the trio. He was 4-1, but suffered an elbow injury in the first league game and missed the rest of the season. “Our fate is in the hands of those three juniors,” Martinez said. “If they were senior pitchers, with another year behind them, I would feel pretty good. But if they do well, we’ll do well.” Alvarez, who has signed a letter of intent with USC, gives the Lancers a star to build around. He hit .429 last season and was named third-team All-Southern Section. “Alvarez is a super player, but he’s not going to be able to do it alone,” Martinez said. “He’ll hit .400, but will need something from the other eight guys.” Alvarez, Macais, who moves from third base to second, and Reitz, who will start at catcher, give Bishop Amat strength up the middle. Reitz will also be used as a relief pitcher. He was 4-2 last season. The outfield is lacking experience, with Persell being the only one with any playing time on the varsity. All in all, the Lancers are probably a season away. “It all depends on those three junior pitchers,” Martinez said.
