OUTLOOK

There’s not a lot of experience, but there is some talent. Archuleta hit .427 and was a first-team all-league pick as a freshman. Schmaus hit .290 and showed he was a slick fielder. They give the Panthers a strong double-play combination. Vanderaa had a record of 2-4 last season, but showed improvement over the summer. Marujo will be the team’s No. 1 starter. He was 6-1 on the junior varsity last season. How well the Panthers do depends on how quickly players like Marujo settle in. “There’s a good chance we could start five sophomores,” Howard said. “That’s not by design, but by talent. We’ll be entertaining.” Howard said he will be better as a coach this year because he’s had one season in the Century League. The Panthers moved over from the Pacific Coast League last season. “It was a rude awakening last year,” Howard said. “In the PCL, they don’t bunt or sacrifice or hit and run. Teams try to have slugfests. That power game can’t compete with the way they coach in this league.”
