On the bright side, first-year coach Broussely inherits a team that returns seven starters. On the dark side, those players won only one league game last season and produced little offense. Broussely fears this season could be no different. “We don’t have enough proven offensive players,” he said. But the coach figures the Pioneers will stay in games with good pitching, and they have three of the best young pitchers in the league. Cadena, Holiday and Livingston performed well last season, and each has at least two seasons left in the program. If all three pitchers are consistent this season, and Norris, Benefiel and Porter deliver on the promise they’ve shown with the bat, the Pioneers could contend for a playoff spot. Last season’s league race was wide open, with four teams finishing within two games of each other. And Broussely thinks it could be close again this season. “Brea-Olinda should be considered the front-runner,” he said. “But everyone should be able to compete for a playoff spot.”
