A month ago, Kansas State fans wanted second-year Coach Dana Altman fired.

Now, Altman may be on the verge of leading the Wildcats into the NCAA tournament.

The possibility of an NCAA bid seemed real enough Saturday after Kansas State overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and defeated No. 6 Missouri, 73-69, in a Big Eight Conference game at Manhattan, Kan.

“We felt we had to beat somebody pretty good, a top 10 team, to give us some credibility,” Altman said. “Now we have to have another good week.”

Kansas State, which improved to 15-10 overall and 5-8 in the Big Eight, took command after halftime. Wylie Howard made two free throws with 35 seconds left and Gaylon Nickerson blocked Anthony Peeler’s short jump shot with four seconds left to preserve the victory.

“We knew they were going to Peeler,” Altman said. “Gaylon just stayed with him and had a good block.

“This is probably as good a win as I’ve had here.”

Missouri forward Jamal Coleman missed the game because of an injury.

Peeler, who scored 23 points, made a shot off a drive to tie the score, 69-69.

With 35 seconds left, Missouri’s Jevon Crudup was called for a foul and Howard made both foul shots to make the score 71-69.

Peeler drove for the tying basket, but Nickerson got a hand on the ball and deflected it. Askia Jones made two free throws that clinched the victory for Kansas State, which ended a four-game losing streak against Missouri (20-5, 8-4).

“Everybody in the Big Eight plays good at home,” Peeler said. “You can’t take anybody for granted. As tough as the Big Eight is, anything is possible.”

Jones scored 20 points for Kansas State, which outscored Missouri, 11-5, in the opening minutes of the second half. The Wildcats took a 45-38 lead on a three-point basket by Nickerson with 15:43 left.

Crudup scored 14 points for Missouri, which beat Kansas State by eight points at home on Feb. 12, made 62% of its shots in the first half and led by as many as 10 points until Kansas State used a 15-4 run to pull to 34-33 at halftime.

No. 8 Ohio State 78, No. 12 Michigan State 65--Jim Jackson scored 20 points for the Buckeyes (19-5, 11-3), who led by as many as 21 points in a Big Ten Conference victory over the Spartans (18-6, 8-6) at East Lansing, Mich.

Ohio State led, 49-41, with 14 minutes left before Michigan State started a comeback.

The Spartans outscored the Buckeyes, 8-2, during the next two minutes, cutting the margin to two points. But Jackson’s jump-hook ended the Spartans’ run, and the Buckeyes converted three Michigan State turnovers into six points and a 59-49 lead.

“We got an All-American effort from Jimmy Jackson, but you win games with defense,” Ohio State Coach Randy Ayers said. “Our defense did a great job of getting after them, and we did a solid job on Mike Peplowski.”

Peplowski and Dwayne Stephens each scored 13 points for Michigan State.

“We lost the game in the first 12 minutes,” Alabama Coach Wimp Sanderson said. “We start off with double-digit turnovers, and we shoot 29% for the first half. You’re not going to win a lot of basketball games like that.”
