Paint-Ball Permit Overturned

Responding to complaints from residents, the Moorpark City Council has overturned the Planning Commission’s approval of a location for paint-ball games.

After a four-hour public hearing, the council voted unanimously last week not to allow the weekend war games on a five-acre wooded site near Los Angeles Place and Avenida Colonia.

Council members said they agreed with residents of the Virginia Colony neighborhood that traffic would cause a safety hazard on the area’s older, narrow streets, where children frequently play.

The decision overturned the Planning Commission’s approval last month of an application by two Los Angeles brothers to run weekend games on the site.

About two dozen paint-ball proponents, almost all from outside Moorpark, addressed the City Council at the hearing, saying that the game is a safe, internationally recognized sport that could provide a recreational outlet for local teen-agers and adults.

But Virginia Colony residents asked the council to give more weight to their concerns because they live near the proposed site.
