Sixteen-year-old Tiger Woods was acclaimed as the youngest player to appear in a PGA Tour event when he played in the recent Nissan Los Angeles Open at Riviera Country Club.

As it turns out, Woods was older than other youngsters who have played in tour events.

The Canadian Open confirmed that Bob Panasuik, 15 years 8 months, played in all four rounds in 1957.

There’s also an unconfirmed report that Bud Williams, 14 years 2 months, played in the Ft. Wayne Open in 1954.

Another youngster, 14-year-old Robert Hooper, of Coral Springs, Fla., could have been the latest claimant to the under-age title, but he failed to qualify for the Honda tournament Monday, shooting an 11-over-par 83.
