Recognition of Voice Disorder Key to Cure
In the Oct. 16, 1991, View section there appeared an article entitled “Dystonia’s Miracle Worker” that was primarily concerned with a voice disorder known as spasmodic dysphonia.
This is a rare disorder that causes the voice to have a croaking, strangulated quality and makes speaking extremely difficult.
My wife has had this condition for more than 30 years, and although she has seen many doctors during that time, she has never been correctly diagnosed until recently.
Dr. Daniel Truong of UCI Medical Center in Orange correctly diagnosed her condition as spasmodic dysphonia. Dr. Truong injected her vocal cards with botulinum toxin, and within three days the spasms in her speech ceased, and her voice is improving and becoming stronger every day.
I want to thank The Times for printing this article, and I cannot express enough appreciation to Dr. Truong for the miracle he has brought about.
