A 39-year-old woman died Saturday during an argument with her estranged husband outside a Loma Portal apartment, San Diego police said.

Maria Carmen Campos was stabbed in the chest during a 12:30 p.m. argument at the residence in the 1600 block of Scott Street and died after being taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, authorities said.

Her estranged husband, Juan Jose Penado, 43, suffered two knife wounds and was listed in satisfactory condition at the hospital late Saturday.

Police said the couple, who are from El Salvador, had been estranged for some time and that Campos had recently moved in with her sister and brother-in-law at the Scott Street address.

On Saturday, not long after Penado showed up at the home, an argument broke out between the couple. Frank Medina, Campos’ brother-in-law, told officers that he heard Penado call out Campos’ name and then his name.

He found Campos lying on the ground with a stab wound and located her husband on a nearby lawn. Officers said that as the two men struggled for the knife, the blade broke, cutting Penado in the chest and biceps.

The couple have four children, ages 15 to 23.
