Long Beach : Initiative Drive for 2-Term Limit on Council, Mayor

Share

A Long Beach attorney is starting an initiative campaign to limit the terms of City Council members and the mayor.

“The process needs to be opened up for a broader section of our talented community,” explained Dennis W. Carroll, who hopes to gather enough signatures to put the referendum on the November ballot. “People get in office and stay in office.”

Carroll’s initiative would bar the mayor and council members from serving more than two terms, although it would allow incumbents to stay in office longer if they were reelected with write-in votes.

The limits would require a change in the Charter Amendment, which must be approved in a public vote. To qualify for the ballot, Carroll must obtain the signatures of 25,000 voters registered in Long Beach.
