Freshman forward David Vaughn made a follow shot with 5.8 seconds remaining as Memphis State ousted ninth-ranked Arkansas from the NCAA tournament, 82-80, in the second round of the Midwest Regional Saturday at the Bradley Center.

The nephew of Memphis State Coach Larry Finch, Vaughn scored 26 points, including 16 in the second half, as the Tigers came back from a 13-point deficit.

Vaughn scored the Tigers’ final six points. He dunked a missed shot by teammate Billy Smith to give Memphis State an 80-78 lead with 1:08 to play. After Darrell Hawkins made two free throws with 55 seconds left to tie, 80-80, the Tigers worked the 45-second clock to the limit before Vaughn launched a 12-foot jump shot. He missed, but got the rebound and put it in.

After a timeout, Arkansas guard Lee Mayberry missed a three-point shot as time ran out.

Memphis State guard Earnest Smith, who grew up with Arkansas forward Todd Day in Memphis, did a good job of checking Day, who had 14 points before fouling out. Day started quickly, scoring 13 points in the first five minutes of the game. But he didn’t score again after making a free throw with 9:01 remaining.
