Southwestern Louisiana won the first game of a women’s softball doubleheader against Northwestern State on Thursday night, 1-0.

The second game was called because of hunger.

The seven-inning first game of the doubleheader stretched to 21 innings. It started at 5:55 p.m. and finally ended at 10:15 p.m. when Cathy Sconzo hit a one-out, bases-loaded single to center field, scoring Heather Turnbow.

“We were too hungry to play the second game,” Northwestern State Coach Rickey McCalister said. “Everybody was starving after the first one.”

The game was the longest for both schools but fell 10 innings short of tying the NCAA Division I record of 31 innings set last year by Creighton and Utah.

“They told me it wasn’t a record,” McCalister said. “It was for me.”

Only one Southwestern Louisiana batter struck out, which meant Northwestern’s fielders had to get 60 outs.
