Voters From 5 Cities to Decide Municipal Races

Voters in five cities in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys will cast ballots today in municipal elections for City Council and on measures dealing with development, taxes and fireworks.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In San Fernando, voters will choose among three candidates, including one incumbent, to fill two seats on the five-member City Council.

Santa Clarita voters will decide among 16 candidates, including one incumbent, seeking two seats on the five-member City Council. Also on the ballot is Measure A, which, if passed, would limit the number of new housing units built in the city to 475 until 2002.

Calabasas voters will select three City Council members from among four candidates, including three incumbents. A fifth candidate, Barry Sullivan, has withdrawn from the race.

In Palmdale, four candidates are running for mayor, a two-year office. Another eight candidates, including one incumbent, are running for two four-year terms on the City Council.

Palmdale voters will also decide Measure B, which calls for a ban on the sale and use of fireworks. Measure C, which is advisory only, asks voters to support a tax increase to pay for a proposed $24-million recreation center.

Lancaster has 12 candidates running for two available City Council seats.

Antelope Valley voters will also decide whether to recall two members of the Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center board.
