FULLERTON : City Seeks U.S. Aid to Repair 2 Channels
The City Council last week voted unanimously to apply for federal disaster relief to repair two flood control channels damaged by heavy rains in February.
The city’s Engineering Department is already applying for federal funds to repair a collapsed portion of a concrete flood channel near Valwood Drive, just east of Brea Boulevard. That repair work is estimated at $29,400, said Chris Johansen, associate engineer.
The application has been sent to the state Office of Emergency Services. The relief funding would be paid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
About 200 feet of the channel wall was breached when runoff from the February storms eroded dirt behind the channel, causing the concrete lining to collapse, Johansen said. There was no residential damage.
The second repair project is along the Fullerton Channel just east of Gilbert Street. It is expected to be handled by the county Environmental Management Agency, but the city expects to be reimbursed for work it performed to stem the breach.
