BELL : Student Shot in Head on His Way to School

Share

A Bell High School junior on his way to school Wednesday morning was critically injured when a rival gang member shot him point-blank in the head, police said.

Louis Carrillo, 18, was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where he remained unconscious late Wednesday afternoon. A bullet remains lodged in Carrillo’s ear, officials said. Police have no suspects in the shooting, but investigators are “convinced the incident was caused by gang rivalry,” Bell Police Sgt. Brad Hooper said.

Carrillo’s notebook was covered with pen-and-ink gang logos, Hooper said. Carrillo, who was walking about a block from school, was approached about 7:30 a.m. by a gunman riding a bicycle, Hooper said. The two apparently had a brief conversation. Then, witnesses said, the cyclist drew a handgun and fired two shots, hitting Carillo in the temple and thigh before fleeing.
