Thousand Oaks Player Finishes 2nd in Tennis Event

Ania Blezynski of Thousand Oaks could handle one Basica sister, but two proved to be one too many.

Blezynski lost to Amber Basica of Rolling Hills, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), in the girls’ 16 final of the Easter Bowl junior tennis championships Saturday at the Doral resort in Miami.

Blezynski, seeded second, defeated Amber’s 15-year old sister Amanda in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Basica’s victory came sooner than she had expected.

“I thought we were going to play three sets,” said Basica, 13, who was seeded third. “All the times I played her, she always comes back in the second set.”

Terry Schroeder of Agoura Hills scored twice but the United States lost to Spain, 9-6, in a semifinal match of the French International water polo tournament in Mennecy, France.

The U.S. team trailed, 7-2, at halftime and, 8-3, after three quarters. The defeat puts the United States into today’s bronze-medal match against the Netherlands.
