SPORTS BRIEFS / PAUL McLEOD : CSULB Restores Faith in Men’s Golf Team With $13,000 Allocation

Cal State Long Beach, which tried to eliminate its men’s golf team two years ago, has allocated $13,000 in athletic department funds for the sport.

Golf, men’s tennis, and men’s and women’s swimming were targeted for elimination by former 49er Athletic Director Corey Johnson in the spring of 1990 as part of a university cost containment effort. But Coach Del Walker saved the golf program by raising more than $26,000 so the team could compete in 1991.

Interim Athletic Director Dave O’Brien, who replaced Johnson in September, decided to make the $13,000 allocation after donations totaling more than $50,000 were received, including $5,000 from the Beach Charities Celebrity Golf Tournament held April 7.

“The additional funding (from the athletic department) is a sign of our long-term commitment to the men’s golf program,” O’Brien said. The athletic department allocation is expected to cover the cost of about half of a scholarship and to pay Walker’s part-time salary in 1993.

Former Cal State Long Beach swimming Coach Tim Shaw has been hired as coach of the Downey Dolphins Swim Club. A graduate of Wilson High and Cal State Long Beach, Shaw, 34, was the 1975 Sullivan Award winner and won a silver medal in swimming at the 1976 Olympics. Shaw lost his job with the 49ers when swimming was dropped in 1990.

Three men’s volleyball players from Cal State Long Beach were awarded first-team berths on the All-Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. team. They were outside hitters Brent Hilliard, a junior, and Matt Lyles, a senior, and middle blocker Alan Knipe, a senior. Junior Setter Jason Stimpfig made the second team.

Bell Gardens High School pitcher Jorge Andrade pitched back-to-back victories on the same day and helped lead the Lancers to the Las Vegas El Dorado Baseball Tournament championship last week. Andrade pitched a total of 13 innings. He defeated Las Vegas Rancho, 13-4, in a game called after six innings. In the nightcap he threw a three-hitter to defeat Bishop Gorman of Nevada, 1-0. Bell Gardens finished the tournament with a 4-0 record.
