Debbie Goldberger, a former Edison High standout now ranked 75th on the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings, won both her singles and doubles matches in straight sets, giving defending champion UC Santa Barbara the lead with 36 points, nine more than Pacific and Fresno State. The Gauchos won all nine of their matches.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 4-0-16, Christ College Irvine 2-1-2--The Vanguards and Eagles split a regularly scheduled doubleheader after Stephanie Wills and Stacey Mounce drove in runs in the top of the eighth in a game that had been resumed after being called after six innings because of darkness April 3.

In the doubleheader opener, Rene Rupe’s fourth-inning single brought in the game’s only run, backing Lisa Merenda’s five-hitter. Southern California College’s Shannon Saylor pitched a two-hitter in a losing effort.

Mounce drove in four runs and Shannon Moreno and Janet Evans three each in the finale, shortened to 4 1/2 innings because of the mercy rule. The Vanguards scored 10 times in the bottom of the fourth.
