Share

The 18-year-old man injured in a drive-by shooting near Huntington Central Park over the weekend has been identified as Juan Diego Murguia of Huntington Beach.

Murguia was treated for a bullet wound in the hip, Officer J.B. Hume said.

According to police, Murguia was shot Sunday shortly before 7:30 p.m. as he stood next to three Latino youths on Central Park Drive near Lakeview Drive.

Witnesses told investigators the gunfire came from a car carrying two Asian men who yelled gang slogans as they drove past Murguia and his friends.

Police are still investigating the cause of the attack and whether Murguia is a gang member, Hume said.

Gang-related shootings are rare in Huntington Beach, and gunplay between gangs of different ethnicity is even more unusual, Lt. Luis Ochoa has said.

“It’s an extremely complicated case, and there are still several details to work out,” Hume said.
