Police have arrested a Santa Ana man at a relative’s home in Long Beach, where he fled after reportedly shooting his 4-year-old daughter in the head by accident.

Bartolo Quintana was arrested without incident and booked into Orange County Jail on Monday night, almost three days after he had returned home from a night of drinking and shot his daughter in the head while sitting in the apartment’s bedroom unloading a gun, police said.

Police will ask the Orange County district attorney to file charges against Quintana of assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment and discharge of a firearm in a negligent manner.

Flerida Quintana, 4, underwent surgery Saturday at UCI Medical Center to remove bullet fragments from her forehead. On Tuesday she was reported to be coherent and responding, said Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Haacker.

“She is up and talking,” Haacker said. “She has a large wound on her forehead that may need plastic surgery. . . . The investigators who have talked to her doctors believe that she has not suffered brain damage.”

Flerida and her mother, Maria Felix Quintana, 34, were sharing a bed about 1 a.m. Saturday at their apartment in the 2600 block of West McFadden Avenue when Bartolo began unloading the gun. After the shooting, Bartolo fled.
