HOLLYWOOD PARK : Another Review Wins After Charts Throws a Shoe, Is Scratched in Gate

A day after Charm A Gendarme was the upset winner of the Senorita Handicap, owners Mr. and Mrs. Robert Walters, trainer Noble Hay III and jockey Rafael Meza didn’t get an opportunity for a weekend sweep.

Charts, their representative in Sunday’s $153,800 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap, was scratched at the starting gate when he lost one of his shoes.

The only available blacksmith was busy in the receiving barn with the horses who were to run in the next race, and rather than delay the LeRoy any further--it started 10 minutes later than the scheduled post time--they decided to scratch Charts.

In a field reduced to five after the earlier declarations of Now Listen and Native Boundary, Another Review scored a 2 3/4-length victory over Sir Beaufort in 1:41 1/5 for the 1 1/16 miles.

Making his first start at Hollywood Park, Another Review, a 4-year-old Buckaroo colt, is perfect in two tries while running on Lasix and might be the favorite in the $200,000 Californian in three weeks. In his final start at Santa Anita, Another Review was a three-length winner at 16-1 in the San Bernardino Handicap.

Never far behind while racing wide, the 2-1 second choice moved near the lead approaching the quarter pole. From there it was a matter of how much he was going to win by.

“With my post, I had the catbird seat,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said. “He was so good today. It wouldn’t have mattered who was in there. He’s doing so good, he’s coming out of his skin.

“I was content to let the other two (Marquetry, the 2-1 favorite, and Sir Beaufort) go on the backstretch. The way he laid his body down and the way he exploded last time, I knew he’d have the same kick or better and be able to mow them down. I’d been going so easy, I was pretty confident turning for home.”

Sir Beaufort, an 8-1 shot, was four lengths ahead of Marquetry. Then came Silver Ending and Qathif.

Sir Beaufort was probably most responsible for the scratching of Charts. With Charts already in his stall in the starting gate, Sir Beaufort was extremely reluctant to load. The delay caused Charts, who had equaled a Golden Gate track record in his last start, to get restless and he threw a shoe.

“We asked if we could tack (the shoe) and even offered to run him without it if we couldn’t,” Hay said. “It only takes about five minutes to tack it.”

The decision to scratch was made by the stewards, and they defended their action.

“There’s a rule that every horse should be properly shod,” steward Ingrid Fermin said. “We would be remiss in allowing him to run and perhaps risking injury to a quality horse just to run in a stakes.

“We tried to look at the alternatives and look for the most expedient way to take care of it. We couldn’t come up with a solution involving bringing the blacksmith from the backside and still be equitable to the entire field. We made the decision, rather than compromise the rest of the horses that were already on the track and had already warmed up. As it was, post time was 4:58, and the race went off at 5:08.”

Getting ready for the $100,000 Inglewood Handicap, Tight Spot worked a mile in 1:36 1/5 before the races Sunday at Hollywood Park.

With Goncalino Almeida aboard, the 1991 Eclipse Award winner went the last quarter in 23 2/5 after fractions of 24 2/5 seconds, 48 and 1:12 4/5.

The Inglewood, at 1 1/16 miles, will be run Sunday and mark the return of Golden Pheasant, who won the 1990 Arlington Million, the year before Tight Spot did. Idle since January, Golden Pheasant worked a mile in 1:39 3/5 on Thursday.

Exbourne will try to defend his Hollywood Turf Handicap championship the next day in the $500,000 race. Other possible starters for the 1 1/4-mile race are Classic Fame, Miss Alleged, Bold Russian, Quest For Fame and Aksar.

Slew The Surgeon made it seven victories in his last nine starts, winning by a nose over Tanker Port in the first race Sunday, a $32,000 claimer.

A 4-year-old son of Slew The Bride, Slew The Surgeon’s latest victory was a copy of his April 5 success at Santa Anita. Both times he was on the inside of Tanker Port and was able to come back to win under apprentice Jose Fuentes after it looked as if he was going to get beaten.

Owned by Delores E. Davis and trained by former jockey Don Pierce, Slew The Surgeon, who has won eight of 18, was claimed by trainer Eric Guillot. Tanker Port, who has won 11 of 38, was claimed by trainer Gerald Sinne.

Horse Racing Notes

In order to make up the four days Hollywood Park lost during the civil unrest in Los Angeles, there have been preliminary discussions about having Monday programs, starting June 15, and continuing through the rest of the meeting, which will end July 27. The Monday programs would have to be approved by the California Horse Racing Board. . . . David Flores didn’t offer any excuses for Marquetry: “He ran pretty well. I was in a good spot (at the top of the stretch) and thought I had some horse left. He got a little tired after the eighth pole.”
