SANTA CLARITA : Blaze Chars 50 Hillside Acres

A brush fire that broke out shortly after noon blackened 50 acres of hillside in Santa Clarita on Monday, officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The fire started on a hill above Benz Road and Copper Hill Drive, said Clark Pearson, a Fire Department inspector. It was battled by more than 235 firefighters and three water-dropping helicopters before being extinguished by 2:30 p.m.

There were no injuries and no structures were damaged, Pearson said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Pearson said the department was bracing for a potentially busy brush-fire season this year “because all the rains gave the brush a chance to grow.”
