South El Monte : Olmos Accepts Mayor’s Job

Share

Councilman Art Olmos has accepted appointment as mayor.

Olmos had turned down a mayoral nomination last month, citing other demands on his time.

But at the urging of constituents, Olmos said last Thursday that he had reversed his decision. Raul Pardo, who had been nominated three weeks ago but failed to receive the required three votes, abstained in the 4-0 vote.

When efforts to choose a vice mayor failed, outgoing mayor Jim Kelly agreed to accept the post, but only on a temporary basis. Nominations of Albert Perez, Raul Pardo and Vera Valdiviez each received only two votes.

A resolution to revise the policy for selection of the mayor was tabled.

Olmos, appointed in 1986 to fill a council vacancy, was elected in 1988 to a four-year term and was reelected last month.
