Arena Football to Debut in S.D.

Share

Arena football makes its debut in San Diego tonight at 7:30 when the Arizona Rattlers play the Cincinnati Rockers in an exhibition game at the Sports Arena.

It will be the first arena football game played in Southern California since the now-defunct Los Angeles Cobras played in the Los Angeles Sports Arena in 1988.

The Arena Football League plays on a field with a length of 50 yards and a width of 80 feet, half the width of regular outdoor field. Each team plays with eight instead of the traditional 11. Players can be substituted only once a quarter and some players on the 18-man roster will play on offense and defense.

The Rattlers and Rockers are expansion clubs in the 12-team league, which is starting its sixth season. Other franchises are Charlotte, San Antonio, Albany, Detroit, Cleveland, Dallas, Sacramento, New Orleans, Orlando and Tampa Bay. The 10-game regular season begins May 29. The championship game will be played Aug. 22.

The Rattlers’ head coach and general manager is Danny White, former Dallas Cowboy quarterback. The Rockers’ biggest name is quarterback Art Schlichter, former Ohio State star.

Tickets are $8, $10 and $12 and can be purchased at the Sports Arena box office and all TicketMaster locations.
