Simi Valley Unified School District officials will converge on the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library today for an education summit aimed at outlining the district’s future goals and identifying ways to achieve them.

The summit is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 3:15 p.m., officials said. Featured speakers include District Supt. Robert W. Purvis and Michael Kirst, a professor at Stanford University who has written a number of books on California’s education policies.

Several teachers, parents, business leaders and city officials have also been invited to participate, said Assistant Supt. Susan Parks.

The summit is closed to the general public.

Some of the topics to be discussed include education financing, child care services, how to reduce class size and revamping educational programs to better prepare high school graduates to enter the work force, Parks said.

“We’re going to be focusing on our district goals and national (education) goals to see how they relate to each other,” Parks said.

“Then we’re going to brainstorm to identify ideas and strategies to reach those goals.”
