A young couple walking on a sidewalk suffered gunshot injuries in a drive-by shooting that may be gang-related, police reported Sunday.

The victims, identified as Ernesto Silva Jr., 20, and Yvette Herrera, 18, both of Placentia, were treated at separate hospitals for wounds which police said were not life-threatening.

Silva suffered birdshot pellet wounds to the head and back, and Herrera had pellet injuries along her back. Police did not disclose the hospitals to which they were taken.

Sgt. Steve Toth said Silva and Herrera were on the sidewalk in the 300 block of West Center Street about 9:25 p.m. Saturday when the shooting took place.

“A little mini-pickup (truck) with several people inside drove by them, and shots were fired from at least one shotgun,” Toth said. He said Herrera and Silva ducked in an attempt to dodge the barrage of shotgun blasts, but they were struck by pellets as the truck roared by.

Toth said someone inside the pickup truck yelled a gang name as the vehicle drove by. Police declined to specify the gang’s name that was called out.
